CLEVELAND HEIGHTS -- The Cleveland Heights-University Heights School District has announced they are laying off 42 teachers.

"As part of an ongoing effort to reduce costs and bring expenditures into line with educational needs, the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School District announced more details of the board-directed plan to reduce the budget and right-size expenditures," a press release indicates.

As a result, the 42 impacted teachers were recently notified they will not have a position next year. This represents a 7 percent reduction in the teaching staff.

"These are very difficult but unfortunately necessary decisions," Superintendent Douglas Heuer says in the press release. "To be fiscally responsible we need to ensure that our expenses are in line with our needs. Simply put, our student population has decreased by 16 percent since 2001. Over that same time span, the district has reduced administrative staff by 21 percent and support staff by 6 percent, but the teaching staff has increased by 5 percent."

Heuer adds that the staff reductions will "not necessitate reductions" in academic programs.

In addition, there will be subsequent reductions of support and administrative staff that will follow in accordance with contractual and legal obligations. The Board of Education will consider the administrative and support staff cuts at the board work session on May 21.
