AKRON -- Akron Police Lt. Rick Edwards says University of Akron starting point guard Alex Abreu  is in custody and was arrested around 4:30 p.m. Thursday for possession of marijuana and trafficking of marijuana.

Edwards says Abreu, 21, was arrested after detectives found more than five pounds of marijuana at Austin Durgala's residence on East Dartmore Street. Durgala is 18.

Durgala faces the same charges as Abreu.

Abreu, a junior from Puerto Rico, is averaging 10.3 points and 6 assists per game this season.

He has been suspended indefinitely from the team as the Zips are beginning their run for a Mid-American Conference men's basketball championship.

Both Abreu and Durgala, who were booked into the Summit County Jail, are scheduled for an arraignment hearing in Akron Municipal Court on Friday at 9 a.m.
