AKRON -- A man is dead following an early morning accident in which the vehicle he was driving went airborne for 70 feet and down an embankment.

Akron Police say the one-vehicle crash happened shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday on East Market Street near the Kelly Avenue overpass.

The driver was reportedly traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed in a 1994 Dodge Ram when he failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway. Police say the driver then lost control, struck a pole, traveled through some landscaping and went airborne for approximately 70 feet down an embankment onto Kelly Avenue.

The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office says the driver has been identified as 34-year-old Michael Lloyd of Akron.

Police say Lloyd, who was not wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:57 a.m.

Alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash, according to police.

The Medical Examiner's Office says an autopsy shows the cause of death is severe head trauma.
