Signing Day: Area student-athletes set to make college choices

High school senior student-athletes from across the country - including several Northeast Ohioans - will sign binding national letters of intent today, officially accepting scholarships offered to them by a college or university.

Today is the start of the regular signing period for many sports, including baseball, football, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, softball, volleyball and wrestling.

Below is a list of student-athletes who are expected to sign a letter of intent today and the school which they're expected to commit to attending in the fall.

The list of expected signings was compiled from submissions provided by area school personnel and published media reports.

Akron Archbishop Hoban

Jimmy Martter - Football - Expected to sign with Harvard University.

Jamie Dean - Soccer - Expected to sign with Ashland University.

Mackenzie Beke - Soccer - Expected to sign with Walsh University. 

Akron Kenmore

Deontae Moore - Football - Expected to sign with the University of Akron. Moore was a four-year starter for the Cardinals and played receiver and outside linebacker. The 6-foot-4, 214-pound athlete was named the 2012 Akron City Series Defensive Player of the Year.  

Alliance Marlington

Dymonte Thomas - Football - Enrolled at the University of Michigan in January and has already signed an honorary letter of intent with the school.

Amherst Steele

Kyle Kelley - Football - Expected to sign with Ashland University. Kelley, who played tight end for the Comets, earned first-team All-Lorain County recognition as a senior.

Guy Schuler - Football - Expected to sign with Ashland University. The linebacker earned second-team All-Ohio recognition as a senior.

Mia Haslage - Soccer - Expected to sign with Edinboro University. The four-year letterwinner earned second-team All-Lorain County recognition as a senior.

Jessica Sobotka - Soccer - Expected to sign with Notre Dame College. Sobotka was named the Lorain County Player of the Year following her senior season.

Celine Burgos - Soccer - Expected to sign with Notre Dame College. Burgos was named the team's co-defender of the year and earned first-team All-Southwestern Conference recognition following her senior season.

Aurora

Patrick Dougherty - Football - Expected to sign with Indiana University. Dougherty, a two-way starter at offensive tackle and defensive tackle for the Greenmen, was named a Division II first-team All-Ohio selection. The 6-foot-5, 265-pound athlete was recruited to play defensive tackle.

Zach Smierciak - Football - Expected to sign with Miami University. Smierciak, a two-way starter at tight end and outside linebacker for the Greenmen, was named a Division II first-team All-Ohio selection. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound athlete was recruited to play linebacker.

Zach Quinn - Football - Expected to sign with the University of Toledo. Quinn, a two-way starter at running back and linebacker for the Greenmen, was named a Division II special mention All-Ohio selection. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound athlete was recruited to play linebacker.

Jake McVay - Football - Expected to sign with Kent State University. McVay, a two-way starter at running back and free safety for the Greenmen, was named a second-team All- Northeast Ohio Inland District selection. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound athlete was recruited to play free safety.

Tommy Typa - Football - Expected to sign with Miami University. The three-year varsity starter threw for almost 6,000 yards and 55 touchdowns in his career. The two-year captain owns all of the school's career and single-season passing records.

Mike Tyler - Football - Expected to sign with Stanford University. The two-year starting defensive end and team captain is the school's career sacks leader and ranks in the top five in total tackles. Tyler was a second-team All-Ohio selection.

Christian Sifford - Football - Expected to sign with Mount Union University.

Allison Stucky - Soccer - Expected to sign with the University of Illinois.

Sarah Sivic - Soccer - Expected to sign with the University of Akron.

Chad Metcalf - Football - Expected to sign with Notre Dame College. As a senior, the team captain was voted the squad's defensive MVP. Metcalf, who played linebacker and defensive back, was named a second-team All-Northeast Ohio District honoree in his final prep season.

Megan O'Connor - Soccer - Expected to sign with Notre Dame College. As a senior, O'Connor scored 32 goals and tallied 16 assists en route to being named the Lorain County Co-Player of the Year.

Brush

Harry Durrah - Football - Expected to sign with Ashland University. As a senior, the running back was named a second-team Northeast Ohio Lakes District selection under the athlete classification.

Tony Andrews - Football - Expected to sign with Lake Erie College. The two-sport athlete was named an honorable mention Northeast Ohio Lakes District selection.

Patric Hannon - Football - Expected to sign with Bowling Green State University. The two-sport athlete was named an All-Northeast Ohio Conference selection as a linebacker in 2011 and was named an honorable mention All-NOC selection in 2010.

Antoine Miles - Football - Expected to sign with Purdue University. The defensive lineman was named a second-team All-Ohio honoree following his senior season.

Grant Lingafelter - Football - Expected to sign with West Virginia University. The third-team All-Ohio selection started 27 games at offensive tackle in his prep career.

Ashlyn Flaherty - Girls Soccer - Expected to sign with Tennessee Tech University. The four-year varsity letterwinner scored 36 career goals and tallied 29 career assists.

Myles Alexander - Football - Expected to commit to the University of Findlay. The 6-foot, 215-pound athlete played linebacker for the Panthers and was named the team's MVP in 2012.

Matt Blaha - Football - Expected to sign with Sienna Heights University in Adrian, Mich. The 6-foot-3, 365-pound offensive guard earned third-team all-state honors.

Nick Astalos - Soccer - Expected to sign with Malone University. Astalos' 50 career goals ranks third all-time in program history. The 26 goals he scored during his senior season ranks first in program history for most goals scored in one season. 

Sam Coverdale - Football - Expected to sign with Northwestern University.

Darryl Richards - Football - Expected to sign with the University of Toledo. A high school quarterback, Richards was recruited to play wide receiver.      

Kirtland

Damon Washington - Football - Expected to sign with Miami University.  

Lake Catholic

John Stepec - Football - Expected to sign with the University of Toledo. A Division III first-team All-Ohio selection, Stepec was recruited to play defensive end.

Kirsten Lorek - Lacrosse - Expected to sign with Duquesne University. The midfielder has lettered in lacrosse since her freshman year as was named the team's MVP last season. Lorek has also lettered two years in soccer and two years in basketball.

Samantha Kline - Volleyball - Expected to sign with Duquesne University. Kline collected four varsity letters in volleyball and was a two-year captain. She played the libero position and was named an All-Ohio honorable mention selection as a senior.

Lakewood

Marquise Tyus - Football - Expected to sign with Ohio Dominican University, a Division II school in Columbus. The senior tailback earned All-West Shore Conference honors this fall.

Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas

Corey Glines - Cross Country and Track - Expected to sign with the University of Maryland. Glines is a two-time All-Ohio honoree in both cross country and track.

Joel Rich - Football - Expected to sign with Boston College. Rich, who played tight end for the Knights, earned first-team All-Ohio honors as a senior.

Lutheran West

Chris Ranc - Football - Expected to sign with Ashland University. The running back earned first-team All-Patriot Conference honors as a senior captain.

Kameron Bremer - Football - Expected to sign with Notre Dame College. Bremer recorded 70 tackles from his defensive line position as a senior en route to being named an All-Patriot Conference selection and the team MVP.

Massillon Jackson

Abby Gindlesberger - Soccer - Expected to sign with the University of Akron. Grindlesberger was named the 2012 Stark County Player of the Year.

James Haupt - Soccer - Expected to sign the University of Dayton. Haupt was named the 2012 Stark County Player of the Year.

Eian Elsass - Football - Expected to sign with Malone University. As a senior captain, Elsass caught 48 passes for 785 yards and six touchdowns.

Nate Locke - Football - Expected to sign with Bowling Green State University.

Alex Wind - Cross Country and Track - Expected to sign with Ohio University. Wind has earned six varsity letters at Jackson. As a senior, he led Jackson's boys cross country team to the Stark County title.

Jody Musser - Cross Country and Track - Expected to sign with Bowling Green State University. Musser is a seven-time varsity letterwinner and led Jackson's girls cross country team to the Stark County title as a senior.

Steven Best - Football - Expected to sign with Ashland University.

Minerva

Jake Riley - Football - Expected to sign with the U.S. Air Force Academy. Riley, a three-year football letterwinner, rushed for 450 yards and threw for another 350 yards in the first half of his senior season before being injured. He rushed for over 12,000 yards as a junior while serving as the team's running back.

Kaele Lightfoot - Cross Country and Track - Expected to sign with the University of Cincinnati. According to athletic director Donald Spinell, Lightfoot is the most decorated runner in the history of Minerva. She has qualified for the state cross country meet all four years and was named an All-Ohio honoree twice. In track, Lightfoot won the 800-meter race in 2011.

Coy Johns - Football - Expected to sign with Malone University.

Victor Hudson - Football - Expected to sign with Edinboro University. Hudson played defensive end and wide receiver for the Knights. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound athlete was named a second-team All-Northeast Ohio Inland District selection after tallying 15 sacks as a senior. Hudson was recruited as a defensive end.

Jenna Huff - Softball - Expected to sign with the University of Findlay. Huff played catcher for the Knights.

North Olmsted

Sean Keller - Football - Expected to sign with Lake Erie College. The offensive lineman earned All-Southwestern Conference honors as a senior.

Will Carter - Football - Expected to sign with Bucknell University. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound wide receiver holds the school record for receptions in a game (17), receiving yards in a game (191), touchdown receptions in a game (three - accomplished twice), receptions in a season (62) and touchdown receptions in a season (10).

Revere

Paul Gabel - Football - Expected to sign with Alderson-Broaddus College, a Division II school in Philippi, W.Va. The 6-foot, 205-pound senior running back/linebacker was named an honorable mention Inland All-District selection.

Jason Tretter - Football - Expected to sign with Purdue University. The 6-foot-7, 305-pound offensive lineman was named a second-team All-Ohio selection as a senior.

Katheryn Laura Babbin - Swimming - Expected to sign with Vanderbilt University. The WRA team MVP in 2011 and 2012, Babbin is the school record-holder in the 500 freestyle.

Brian Czerwonka - Lacrosse - Expected to sign with Robert Morris University. Czerwonka, who plays goalie, was named a 2012 Brine National High School All-American and earned a spot on the Ohio Midwest Regional Team in the Brine National Lacrosse Classic.

Eli Dawson - Football - Expected to sign with the U.S. Naval Academy. Dawson played defensive end and outside linebacker for WRA.

Kareem Hunt - Football - Expected to sign with the University of Toledo.

Steve Korzanowski - Football - Expected to sign with Heidelberg University.

Anthony Federico - Football - Expected to sign with the University of Findlay.

Dominic Guinta - Football - Undecided.

Woodridge

Hunter Niswander - Football - Expected to sign with Northwestern University as a kicker/punter. The three-sport athlete holds the state record for most consecutive PATs without a miss with 111. Niswander was named the No. 1 kicker/punter in the country in the 2013 recruiting class at the Top Kicker in America competition in Las Vegas in February 2012.

Wooster

Charles Cairnie - Football - Expected to sign with Colgate University. The 2012 team captain was named an honorable mention All-Northeast Ohio Inland District selection. Cairnie played defensive end for the Generals.

Youngstown Cardinal Mooney

Marcus McWilson - Football - Expected to sign with the University of Kentucky.
