EAST CLEVELAND -- Two people are dead following a chase and shooting involving police.
Police say the incident started on West St. Clair Avenue on Thursday night near the Justice Center.
An officer saw the car drive past and one of the occupants appeared to have fired a shot at or in the vicinity of the officer.
Officers pursued the car as it drove off and the driver refused to stop. The chase went through Cleveland, Bratenahl and East Cleveland.
The chase ended at 14600 Terrace Road where shots were fired and the two people inside the car being pursued were pronounced dead at the scene.
East Cleveland is handling the investigation.
The location where the chase ended was near Heritage Middle School, which was closed Friday as a result.
Witnesses say multiple bullet holes could be seen in the windshield of the suspects' car. Various police cruisers reportedly had gunfire-related damage as well.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office says the occupants of the car were a man in his forties and a woman believed to be about 30 years old.
The medical examiner says the two occupants did not have any identification on them so no names can be determined at this time.
