ST. JOSEPH, Michigan - Authorities say an Illinois man has drowned in Lake Michigan in southwestern Michigan as high waves sweep the state's western coast.
The 41-year-old victim is from Montgomery, Ill. His name was not immediately released Sunday by authorities in Berrien County. TV station WOOD says waves were reported to be at least 6 feet high.
More than 100 miles north, the city of Ludington closed Stearns Park beach due to high waves and rip currents in Lake Michigan. In Pentwater in Oceana County, authorities were searching for a missing swimmer in the same lake.
Sheriff Bob Farber says there were conflicting reports about whether the man was in the water.
