CLEVELAND -- Police say a four-year-old whose mother accidentally ran her over with a riding lawnmower Monday afternoon in Vermilion was flown to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland.
Vermilion Police say that, just after 4 p.m. Monday, they were asked to help coordinate a landing zone for an emergency helicopter near Jerusalem Road.
Police say they were advised by North Central EMS that the girl's mother was mowing the lawn and began backing up the mower, not noticing that her daughter had run up behind the mower.
That's when the mower knocked over the girl, causing both of her feet to get caught in the mower's blades, police said.
The girl was flown to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital and is listed in critical condition.
Within a matter of seconds, a 4-year-old little girl who was playing in her front yard ran behind a riding mower driven by her mother.
Cadence Justice is in the fight of her life as doctors here at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital fight to save her limbs.
Cadence and her siblings were playing out front, while mom kept a watchful eye from this riding mower.
When the school bus carrying Cadence's sister stopped, Mom looked away and, in a matter of seconds, Cadence went to get a toy and the mother swears up and down she didn't see her.
That toy that fell behind Mom's mower as it reversed.
Cadence's aunt describes how her sister rushed to save her little girl.
"Sshe got off the lawnmower and picked it up and she crawled out from underneath it." she tells Channel 3.
That mower still sits in the lawn where it all happened as Mom hasn't been able to bring herself to come back home.
