CLEVELAND -- A rescue mission was underway on the city's east side, for a four week old puppy that had gotten stuck in a sewage pipe. The Northeast Ohio Sewer District sent out a crew of about a half dozen to help with the rescue.
The puppy's owner, Johnnie Lewis says he noticed the puppy missing Tuesday. "I went down there to go feed them and I noticed one of them was missing," Lewis said.
The litter of puppies and the dogs' mother were down in the basement. The puppy somehow managed to find its way down an uncapped sewage pipe that ran from the basement underneath the home.
"He kept yipping, and the mama kept going toward the drain. I looked down there and I find out the puppy was down there, so I tried sticking my hand down there to get it out but it moved too far," Lewis said.
Once the puppy was removed, he was taken to Gateway Animal Hospital.
Staff tells Channel 3 that the puppy, although free from the pipe, isn't out of the woods. They describe the puppy's state as "guarded."
