This is the new kind of recess that is sweeping the country --structured recess. The kids have activities that are organized, games with partners or a walking club.

"At first, there was concern it was too regimented, but it reinforces positive behavior inside the building and continues it on the playground," says Coordinator of Student Support Programs Jeff Johnston.

All elementary schools in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School District will eventually have organized recess.

"We had to do a good job of communicating with parents, so they understood. It has meant more positive interaction with students and more inclusion," says Principal Sherry Miller.

The children can still choose the activities they want to take part in or they can choose to just play on the monkey bars.

The district says it has cut down on fights and injuries on the playground. Playgrounds are a problem area for bullying at most schools.

There is also growing concern about obesity in children across the country, and this type of recess gets all kids moving. Some children before just stood around talking to friends, not being physically active.

"It's still the old games we all played, they have just been modified and we are getting good results," says Physical Education teacher Fiona Kuntz.
