CLEVELAND -- The people who process paychecks for Naval and Marine personnel, military retirees and the President have just learned their own paychecks will be getting smaller.

1,984 workers at the local DFAS office, the federal agency with a major center in Cleveland, got notices that they will each be furloughed one day a week for 11 weeks between July 2 and September 30.

Union spokesman Troy Marshall claimed DFAS had figured out other cost reductions to avert furloughs, but that the Defense Department decreed they had to take place.

DFAS's Cleveland operations pay 319,000 active duty personnel in the Navy, 195,000 in the Marines and two million military retirees.

Marshall predicted members would work hard to make sure there were no delays in processing paychecks.
