  • CLEVELAND -- First Energy Stadium, home of the Cleveland Browns. A few hundred yards north, a new "Brown" has taken up residence.

    A brown pelican.

We sent WKYC photojournalist Carl "Big Daddy" Bachtel to check it out.

This is only the third recorded pelican sighting in Cuyahoga County. Jen Brumfield, a birding legend, found the sea bird. It rates high on her life list.

She said it was her 294th and it ranks in the top 10.

"Absolutely in the top 10," she said. "It's just an incredible bird."

The pelican hangs out along the break walls in front of Cleveland, looking for fish. Blown here in a storm, the bird is enjoying a summer of fishing off Cleveland.

Sightings near the old Coast Guard station at Wendy Park are common.

The bird has its own Facebook page, a Twitter account @CLEPelican, and has inspired a pelican-themed T-shirt at cleclothingco.com as well.

Proceeds from the shirt sales support Cleveland Metroparks youth fishing programs. For more information, follow the links provided.

Rare sightings like the Cleveland brown are inspiring.

Hopefully, the rare Cleveland brown pelican will attract another rarity this fall -- some Cleveland Browns wins.
