CLEVELAND -- The National Department of Transportation says school buses are the safest way for students to get to and from school.
In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that students are 50 times more likely to arrive at school alive if they take the bus rather than drive themselves or ride with a friend. Students are 20 times more likely to make it to school safely on the bus rather than riding with a parent.
Still, experts state that an average of 12 fatalities a year around a bus can easily be addressed.
They say the most common problem is other drivers passing school buses, because they don't know the law or are distracted while driving.
This safety week is meant to help bring awareness to drivers, students and parents to get the number 12 down to 0.
