ATHENS, Ohio -- An Ohio police chief says photos taken of an alleged rape last week may seem despicable but are also helping police in their investigation.
Police in Athens say the people who took the photos and posted them online may have thought they were seeing consensual public sex, but the images now are being examined in connection with an Ohio University student's rape report.
A police report says the female student reported unconsenting sexual conduct with a man on a street near campus between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday.
Athens Police Chief Tom Pyle tells WBNS-TV in Columbus (http://bit.ly/17sjoXK) that the photos and a video posted online that night are essential to the investigation.
Ohio University says in a statement it is assisting the investigation and providing support to the accuser.
